Who We Are
The Autism Society of the San Francisco Bay Area is a grass-roots organization of parents, family members, friends and professionals concerned about the well-being of local autism families, with an emphasis on expanding the limited lifespan care options for the dramatically increasing numbers of adults with autism. We are therefore working together toward the following primary goals:
Why the focus on adults? Because plenty of other organizations have devoted themselves to the needs of children with ASD and there is a notable vacuum of leadership regarding the complicated, demanding adult issues. Furthermore, ASD children inevitably become ASD adults and will need support for their entire lifetimes. School-age individuals have the benefit of the federal IDEA, but in spite of some legislation and financial support such as Medicare, there is no such requirement for programs after a person with ASD turns 22.
Please see Resources for listings of other organizations and support groups that can assist with diagnosis, early intervention, and school-age issues.
We began in 1967 and now work in the six major San Francisco Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara. Please join our email list.
Meet our 2016-17 Board of Directors. We are an all-volunteer organization and depend on your donations for our work. Thank you!
