East Bay Housing Networking Group, January 25, 2014
Summary of the first meeting of the East Bay Parent Networking Group
Held January 25, 2014 in Union City
Thirteen adults, representing ten families, met to discuss housing options of interest to them and other families like them.
The absolute top issue of importance to all was safety. Even parents of children with high-functioning autism said that their adult children would not or could not tell them if someone had done something inappropriate to them.
The need for meaningful day programming emerged as extremely important in the choice of housing type and location.
Other issues to emerge were the lack of information about services available, transitioning from living with family to living outside the family home, and the need for support groups for family caregivers.
Next meeting: Saturday, March 1 in Union City
